I recently joined this company as a contractor to redesign their WordPress website. Movie Glu recently underwent a rebrand and wanted to improve not just the UI but also the UX of their website. I was the sole UX and UI Designer on this project and collaborated with the CEO and contact strategist.

As the sole UX designer on this freelance project, I wore multiple hats: Graphic Designer, Web Designer, and Product Designer. My primary role was to conduct competitive research, create wireframes and sitemaps, and re-design an aesthetic website. The goal was to update an outdated website.

The main deliverables were:

  • Website design (including layout, wireframes, visuals, interactive prototype and design system)

  • Images (including stock images)

  • Implementation and adding content to WordPress

  • User Testing interviews (if required).

MovieGlu API provides easy-to-use APIs for accessing movie, theatre, and showtime data. It offers global coverage with film and cinema data for over 60 countries worldwide. The APIs are fast, reliable, and built on Amazon's highly reliable AWS infrastructure. MovieGlu API is used by a range of businesses, from startups to established brands, and is integrated into websites and apps used by millions of people every month.

The primary challenge I faced was the tight time and budget constraints. Specifically, I needed to rapidly redesign, scale, and implement a responsive design using WordPress while adhering to these limitations.

The client and ceo approached me with concerns about how outdated the website was in comparison to their competitors.

 the designs

1 Product designer (me)

1 CEO

Figma, WordPress, Midjourney, Adobe Photoshop, Relume

Product designer, Web designer,

Overall: 2 months

Step 1: Evaluating the existing sitemap and redesigning an updated site map

Step 2: Create a Sitemap for the new website structure. Based on a UX audit of the website, I created a new sitemap to condense and include the additional pages requested in the new design

Step 3: Based on that Wireframe, I began to visualise the new website structure through low fidelity wireframes

Solution: I used Relume to streamline and accelerate the Informational architecture process. Using AI generation, i put in props for each page based on the content and function of each page

Step 4: Bringing the designs into figma to iterate and increase the fidelity

Solution: Based on the AI Sitemap generated by the prompts for each screen, I was able to next generate Low fidelity wireframes made up of components and copy content

Step 5 : Leveraging the template of the Wireframes made by utilising AI, I was able to expedite the process of getting the designs into Figma.

In Figma, I shared my canvas with the client and went into refining and iterarting the wireframes to meet the client needs. In this process, I went through multiple review and revision sessions twice a week (Tues/Thur) with the client going through all the web pages.

The website I designed provides Waakei with a digital presence, enabling them to connect with new and existing customers online. By incorporating user preferences and business goals, the e-commerce platform offers an intuitive ordering system tailored to Waakei's specialties in baked goods and catering services.

The simplified online customer interaction process addresses the business's challenges in transitioning to digital operations, bridging the gap between their traditional offline model and the need for an online presence. By improving the customer experience and expanding Waakei's reach, the website aims to increase conversion rates by 5% and maintain user retention, ultimately contributing to the business's recovery from the impacts of COVID-19.

Outcome

The project is still ongoing, as there are dependencies related to the client's website functionality that require additional assets and deliverables. However, the design process and the resulting website demonstrate a comprehensive approach to understanding user needs, business goals, and market dynamics, culminating in a user-friendly e-commerce solution tailored to Waakei's unique challenges and opportunities.

In hindsight, I would have been more selective in choosing research methodologies, prioritizing those that would move the project closer to its goal, and setting a clear project scope to avoid spending excessive time on design iterations.

Moving forward, I would conduct a thorough analysis of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and SEO measures to gain insights into the website's performance and user adoption rates. By linking these metrics to business objectives, I can identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for optimization, providing actionable insights to enhance the business's overall performance.
