Context

Our client, an aviation company based at Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, specialises in aircraft maintenance and fault diagnosis. However, their workflows had become tangled in manual steps and isolated data systems, causing downtime and inefficiencies. This meant junior engineers relied heavily on senior team members, limiting productivity and growth. FIVA’s purpose was to provide AI-driven guidance, making diagnostic processes faster, more efficient, and accessible to all team members.

As the UX Designer and Researcher on the FIVA project, my mission was to fully understand the workflows and challenges engineers faced on the job. During my site visit, I observed firsthand how these teams tackled fault diagnosis, conducted workshops, and gathered crucial insights on improving FIVA to meet user expectations. My focus was on creating a seamless experience that supported engineers’ decision-making, making complex processes feel intuitive and empowering for both junior and senior users.

The challenge was to improve the maintenance workflow by eliminating manual steps and integrating systems. Engineers faced issues with the limited Toolbox app functionalities and lack of data access. Empowering junior engineers and democratizing knowledge through AI support were critical objectives.

Feeling out of depth: As a junior UX Designer, a personal challenge was feeling a little bit out of depth because I was trusted to go on such an important stakeholder visit four months into starting the job. This speaks volumes about the trust the team placed in my abilities, but it also adds immense pressure to perform well.

Limited project context: As suggested by my lack of involvement in the UI Input, I was less involved in the FIVA project than in the other projects. This put the onus on me to quickly get up to speed on complex technical domains and project details to be able to meaningfully contribute in conversations with the clients.

❗ *P.S. At this stage, I did not take part in designing the Interface for the FIVA presentation. However, after validating the FIVA click dummy with the stakeholders, I was due to discuss the feedback I had gathered and implement potential UI updates. We were beginning to discuss validating feedback from the stakeholders and updating the FIVA interface based on it. Before making any changes to the UI, the technical feasibility needed to be discussed with PPD and the product teams.

⚠️ Unfortunately, this process was discontinued due to funding cessation and company-wide redundancies.
